All along the old back road, people stop to talk at her garden gate
while inside the family cries all through the night
Because the old woman has passed away
I loved her so I know she was a special one
A lovely lady, and a gentle old soul
And she taught me to sing an old folk song
It's got a melody from a hundred years ago
And she sang
Come a lou, come a lou, come a high low
Come down a merry stream, I'm remembering.
Those memories have given me so much
She wore her age so gracefully
(line I don't know)
and I pray that there is a little of her in me
She sang
repeat chorus
Old oklahoma in the summertime
In her rocking chair she's a-sittin' there on the porch
While the hounds are howling through the hot black night
And that old fox, he's running like he never has run before
When I hear the melody, and when I play my song
Every note you hear from me, she's singing right along
repeat chorus
All along the old backroad, people stop to talk at the garden gate
While inside the family cries all through the night
Did you hear that old Mrs. Whitten has passed away today?
Come a lou, come a lou, come a high low
Come down a merry stream
Come a ram tam tam and a dippy, dippy dow
Hear the bow, the bow-wow-wow
The bugle's horn, The red fox sittin' in the hidey hole
Through the wood's we're gonna go boys, through the woods we're gonna go.
-- Those are all the lyrics I remember, but I have no idea who sings that song. I've been looking for years.
